The Arctic Bahamas - EXPEDITION AKOR WEEK 9

This week's newsletter brings only good news.
First, let's remember that our adventurers took to the ice again on May 11, after being dropped off on the ice floes to cross the Northwest Passage, which thawed this year 2-3 weeks early.

As they flew over the strait, they realized that their decision not to enter was wise: the strait was covered with miles of open water and moving ice. This rendered the channel impassable.

Our explorers were very impressed by their pilot, who finally put them on the ice after two unsuccessful attempts due to bad weather conditions. After this little plane ride and a successful landing, the guys quickly realized that the skiing conditions had improved considerably.

The ice, they revealed, is "perfect": smooth but grippy. In one week, the men encountered only three hours of difficult ice. Nicolas called the ease with which they ski "black magic."

In addition, the average temperature is -5 C. This temperature change is a welcome sight. For our friends, who have experienced -25 to -35 on the thermometer for 40 days, the climate is in Bahamas mode.

This weather has brought about a new action for the adventurers. They must now imperatively slather on sun cream. Otherwise, their faces, which are now exposed, would burn under a raw sun. This radiant heat of the clear skies is doubled by the reflections of the snow. They can even, in the evening, be comfortable without coats in the tent!

As we mentioned in a previous newsletter, they had recalculated their daily route to reduce the number of kilometres covered each day to 18. In fact, with the conditions described above, they are doing about 25!

This means that each day they are ahead of their calculations. Every four days, they gain a day's head start.

Even though the team from expedition AKOR crossed polar bear tracks twice during this past week of their journey, they are now entering a segment known for its low bear traffic.

This means that the men can rest easy, knowing their chances of being woken up by bears are smaller than ever before.

For the past week, our friends have remained joking, laughing, and in a good mood.
