Out With The Old, In With The New- Expedition Akor Week 24

6 months.
150 days.
Still going strong.

Näak Blog | Expedition Akor Week 24

It's a great moment for our friends from AKOR 2021. The last section of the expedition, the cycling section, is now underway.

Since September 25, they have been riding on the dirt roads between Lake Wollaston and the town of La Ronge.

It was a positive start for the Expedition Akor team and the two new participants for the bicycle portion of the journey: Béatrice Lafrenière and Isabella Donati-Simmons. Both are good friends of Étienne, and they were welcomed, of course, with open arms.

Their arrival brings another breath of fresh air to the group's atmosphere and makes the cycling section a parity enterprise.

Progress is going very well as they all have new muscles to work on, new bikes to learn on and new equipment.

They are currently riding between 60 and 80 km per day, even though they are on a dirt road where large ore trucks sometimes speed by. The sight of cyclists can be assumed to be very seldom, so the team is on high alert.

They expect to be able to ride the road for a few days, and they expect to be able to travel up to 125 km per day when they are on the asphalt.

Since the start, they have not had any equipment breakdowns, which is nothing short of a miracle. This is a godsend for the team, considering the impressive number of breakdowns they experienced during the expedition since leaving Eureka.

They will be in the town of La Ronge in 2 days and expect to be in Prince Albert in 5 to 6 days. At the time being, it is still difficult to give a precise arrival date in Pointe Pelee, which is at the very end of the course. However, it should be between October 25 and November 5.

Last night, our brave team slept in a motel in Brabant Lake. For Nicolas and Guillaume, it's the first real bed for more than a hundred days.

The truckers and other people they met on the road were very courteous and surprised to see 6 crazy souls pedalling down roads so far from any paved urban area.

Our friends have about 3700 kilometres to cover through Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario to arrive at Point Pelee Park, near the American city of Detroit.

May the cardio be with them!
